Since they had not come across any other campers, it was unlikely that it was anyone’s dog. Gaylen decided to turn the canoe around to investigate the source of the noise. Luckily he did, as they discovered a stranded dog trapped in thick mud, desperately calling for help.
Upon closer inspection, they saw that the stranded dog was an elderly Saint Bernard, malnourished, exhausted, and with a tick attached to his eye. The rest of the group quickly turned their canoes around and joined forces to rescue the poor creature. Even though the mud was deep and thick, everyone was determined to save the dog, using oars as shovels to dig him out.

He explained the situation, and within 20 minutes, the Carver Fire Department arrived to lend aid to the distressed pup. They used a harness to fasten under his chest and with the help of Mitch’s friends, were able to pull Wilson out of the mud pit, an act that was celebrated with great jubilation.
